Filming in Nigeria

Finding a fixer
in Nigeria

Filming in Nigeria is a wonderful experience but it’s not always an easy one. Organizing visas and film permits, negotiating our infrastructure, and understanding our environment can sometimes prove problematic if you don’t have a fixer in Nigeria to show you the way.  This is why Nigeria Fixer is the production support company you need. Our team of professionals don’t just offer exceptional production support—we guide you every step of the way to ensure your filming experience in Nigeria is phenomenal.

Visa for Nigeria

For short-term film projects in Nigeria, you’ll need a standard business visa that can be applied for through your own country’s Nigerian Embassy. If you’ll be in Nigeria for more than 90 days, you’ll need a temporary work visa, which is a little more complicated. Depending on your country of origin, there may also be a fee. All of this will be fine if you’ve partnered up with Nigeria Fixer. We’re well used to helping filmmakers apply for all types of visas.

Film Permits Nigeria

Basic film permits to shoot in streets and other general public areas are obtained from the Nigerian Film Corporation. They allow you to film in the designated location for up to a week and have a standard $350 fee. Generally, they don’t take that long to process once you have the required documents, which your fixer in Nigeria will fill you in on. Permits to film in national parks or government buildings can be a little more complicated to acquire—but not impossible!

Special equipment
renting info

Most of the top film equipment rental companies are based in Lagos, the heart of the Nollywood film industry. We can assure you that they have excellent cameras, lenses, lighting, sound desks and more, as well as top-of-the-range specialist parts. As your film fixer in Nigeria, we can guarantee you’ll get the exact gear you want. And because we’re frequent customers of these local businesses, everything we book with them comes with great rates and discounts.

Cultural facts

“Abole!” “Kedu!” “Sannu!” Har fa!” OK, these are just four of the hundreds of ways to greet a Nigerian when in their country! You won’t be able to say “hello” in the 300+ languages here, but depending on where you have film permits to shoot, knowing some basic phrases of the local dialect can help in fostering goodwill and cooperation with local communities and officials. Nigerian infrastructure isn’t perfect either. So be patient, accept the realities, and rely on your fixer to help with the issues.

Weather when filming in Nigeria

Nigeria has a mostly tropical climate. This means there’s a wet season from April to October and a dry season from November to March. Depending on where you’re filming in Nigeria, though, you can experience other kinds of weather too. For example, during the wet season, there’s usually a lot more rainfall in the southeast while in the dry season, states in the northeast, which are closer to the Sahara, can feel the brunt of the hot, desert winds.

Tax rebate in Nigeria

There are no official cash rebates for foreign media and film professionals filming in Nigeria. However, that doesn’t mean that there aren’t incentives to be had, particularly for productions that show Nigeria in a good light. Promoting local tourism is important to the government and, for that reason, they’re often happy to work with your fixer in Nigeria to organize additional film permits, security measures, and even offer reduced or free rates on local accommodation and transport.

Filming in Nigeria

When filming in Nigeria you will be amazed at the welcoming people, fascinating culture and many wonderful locations. But it can get complicated if you don’t have a film fixer in Nigeria helping you ensure everything moves along efficiently and effectively. Our company is a professional, proficient video support business that has helped many diverse foreign film projects find success in Nigeria.

Part of this is simply due to the fact that we have the local connection—and they don’t. The relationships that we’ve built over the years with relevant government departments, key communities in prominent film locations, and top equipment rental firms cannot be overlooked. These connections, along with our expert services, are what you 100% need if you want a smooth, straightforward and ultimately successful production here in fascinating Nigeria.
